About the workshop:
The 3rd annual European workshop on Computer-Aided Qualitative Research 2010 (Twitter hashtag #CAQRE) was held on the 7 & 8 October 2010 in Lisbon. This international workshop were co-organised by Lisbon University Institute (ISTCE-IUL) and Merlien Institute. The aim of the workshop was to bring together researchers, practitioners and trainers to discuss the key challenges and opportunities of advancing qualitative research using software.

Programme highlights: This event provided excellent opportunities for delegates to interact with experts and discuss innovative ways of conducting qualitative data analysis using software. Highlights of this event included:

Qualitative software and their implications on methodology and practical utility - Dr Silvana di Gregorio

In this interactive session, Dr Silvana di Gregorio discussed the latest features of Atlas.ti 6.0 and NVivo 9.0. She compared the software packages in terms of their methodological utility and practical usability. In addition, for the first time in CAQDAS's history, a new web-based CAQDAS tool were introduced. Silvana discussed how this new web-based tool couldpotentially change the way we analyse qualitative data.

Successful strategies for qualitative data analysis with aid of software from A to Z - Dr Susanne Friese

A brainstorming workshop was facilitated by Dr Susanne Friese from the University of Hannover. Delegates were divided into teams to discuss and brainstorm best practices for conducting qualitative data analysis with the aid of software. Delegates discussed the role of software and its implications to the research cycle. i.e. from project planning, data collection, data analysis to write-up and reporting.

Can we skip the laborious process of transcribing data files using software? - Jeanine Evers

In this round-table discussion, Jeanine addressed the issue whether or not qualitative data analysis software enables us to skip the extremely laborious process and time consuming act of transcribing data. Can we avoid this time consuming process, now that software enables us to directly code audio and video files? Jeanine invited participants to challenge her findings in this interactive discussion. She also raised some quality issues that might arise from the decision whether or not to transcribe.

Other topics presented in this workshop:

>Discussing the role of software for evaluating the quality of qualitative research
>Triangulation of media data using different software: what are the implications for findings?
>Discussing the trends and developments of CAQDAS in qualitative research
>Commercial packages or open source? evaluating open-source CAQDAS software
>Using computer-aided qualitative analysis software in phenomenological research
